Teach for America

I choose to do teach for America. I have some friends who taught in Baltimore before graduating from Towson. I thought this would be something very interesting for me to find out about.

So first of all I found out that Omari Todd is the executive director, and not only is he part of this now, he participated in this many years ago.

My first step was to e-mail him, since I couldn't get a hold of him. Next, I am going to interview two people I know who did teach in Baltimore and see what they think about the program and it's benefits to the children in the class rooms.

I found out that this year in Baltimore there are 155 corp members of Teach for America. These are people who are teaching in our lowest income areas. Also while I was looking through some papers, I found out that Wachovia Foundation gives $100,000 to Baltimore towards this program. To me that is amazing. These are people who are making a true different in our children and their educations.

The corps have a tremendous impact on Baltimore, in 2005-2006 school year 128 people were corps members. Those 128 people impacted 10,000 students. Corps are expected to reach at least 13,000 children this year.

Corps members will be placed into a subject: mathematics, science, social studies, English or a foreign language. Corps usually fit a certain profile, with an average GPA of 3.6, and 1321 on the SAT's.
